Mattox Funeral Home was started in the late 1940s by Chet Mattox and his wife, Betty, after they returned to Fontanet following World War II. Before the war, he had worked for the Foley Funeral Home which Mr. and Mrs. Mattox subsequently purchased in 1948.
Mr. Mattox operated the business until his death in 1965. At that time Mrs. Mattox continued to operate the business with the help of her children, Diane, John and Joe, along with Terry Wood. John and Terry enrolled in the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and kept the business licensed until Joe graduated from high school and college. In 1974 Joe, Mrs. Mattox and Mr. Wood opened the Mattox Wood Funeral Home in North Terre Haute. The Wood name was added because of Mr. Wood’s long-time loyalty and help to the Mattox family.
In 1983 Joe added the Terre Haute Crematory, the first crematory in Terre Haute. At the time, it was the only crematory between Indianapolis and St. Louis. In 1986 Joe and his wife, Linda, purchased the McHugh Funeral Homes located in Farmersburg, Shelburn and Hymera. In 1990 they purchased the Ryan Funeral Home on South Seventh Street in Terre Haute. Another acquisition followed in 1991 when they purchased the Bedino Funeral Homes, located in West Terre Haute, South Sixth Street in Terre Haute and Riley.
Mr. and Mrs. Mattox continued to operate the business until they sold to Keystone in 1998. Subsequently, Keystone was acquired by Service Corporation International in 2010.
